The Alfa Romeo Sprint Speciale was introduced at the Turin Motor Show in late 1957. The Sprint Speciale is clothed in some of the most sensuous bodywork ever to emerge from the Bertone design studio. Inspired by the great aerodynamicist Franco Scaglione, the lovingly formed sheet metal reflects the global 1950s love affair with supersonic flight, as well as the passion inherent in all the great Italian automotive designs. From every viewing angle, delicate curve gives way to subtle sweep. Yet there is nothing flighty or voluptuous about the SS's lines. Rather, it quickens the pulse in the way of a demure woman who reveals previously undreamed of curves.

Quite apart from great looks, the SS was the performance revelation of its day. From just 1570 cc it ran a top speed of 120 MPH. This was due in part to its specially tuned-by-the-factory motor and its light body mass at just 875 kg, but most of all, to its incredible aerodynamic efficiency. Way back in 1958, the SS had a drag coefficient factor of 0.27, which is better than just about any modern aero saloon or hatchback in production today!

The little car went on to pass the ultimate styling test with flying colors, when it was carried over alongside the much more modern Giulia Sprint range from 1963 onwards, still selling in respectable numbers until production ended early in 1966.
